  1. Plastic is any of the stable synthetic 
  2. materials that are fluid at some stage in 
  3. their manufacture, when they can be shaped, 
  4. and that later set to rigid or semi-rigid 
  5. solids. Plastics today are chiefly derived 
  6. from petroleum. Most are polymers, made up of 
  7. long chains of identical molecules. Processed 
  8. by extrusion, injection-moulding, 
  9. vacuum-forming and compression, plastics 
  10. emerge in consistencies ranging from hard and 
  11. inflexible to soft and rubbery. They replace 
  12. an increasing number of natural substances, 
  13. being lightweight, easy to clean, durable, 
  14. and capable of being rendered very strong, 
  15. eg: by the addition of carbon fibres, for 
  16. building aircraft and other engineering 
  17. projects.
